5 + 2 tips for taking care of yourself and your family (and work)

One of the difficulties you might face as a woman is taking care of yourself and your family too… Oh, and our careers too! The question is: “How do I balance time and attention for myself with my commitments to family, home and work?

There is a time in the lives of women who choose to start a family that is full of commitments and dedication to others. It can be between 30 and 45 or between 35 and 50. I became a mother later in life and fall into the second age range. Between work, family, housework, my daughters, school and various social commitments (they have more than I do!), there is so much to do all at the same time. How can you do RIGHT by your family WITHOUT neglecting yourself?

Two for the price of one
Actually, this is a question for all the women, especially those who have opted to focus on their careers and have even less time for themselves. One of the lifestyle choices that I have always sought to make with my family is to kill two birds with one stone. Kind of like a two-for-one deal at the supermarket. Indeed, if you think about it, taking care of your physical shape directly benefits your mood, your ability to think clearly, your problem-solving skills and sense of empathy. We can easily CONNECT “taking care of yourself” to benefits for your family and work.

Maximising results does not mean “doing two things at once”, but “doing one thing for multiple results”.

Eliminate and simplify
During this period in a woman’s life, taking care of yourself and your family (and work) REQUIRES learning how to simplify by eliminating extra work at home and at her job. Here are a few examples:

  • Do you really need so many things in your closet to keep tidy, clean and freshly ironed, only to complain that you’ve got nothing to wear? Keeping a tidy closet and knowing her best colors are two essential skills that every woman should master to learn how to take care of herself.

  • Do you really need to resolve your husband’s or child’s personality defect by shouting at them? Opposing an undesired behavior in someone else is never constructive. This has been demonstrated by behavioral psychology, which shows that “emphasizing a behavior reinforces that behavior”. It is frequently useful (if not essential to our survival) to IGNORE certain annoying behaviors and, rather, focus on giving sincere, specific praise when your family members do something right to help us “take care of the house”. This is where you can use the concept of emphasising behavior in order to reinforce it to your advantage.

  • Moreover, at work or with your friends, do you really need to meddle in other people’s problems? How many times have we complained about having to take care of our friends or colleagues? The truth is, no one ever asked us to. It is important learn how to choose WHERE and HOW to intervene. Think about how much time you could save and devote to taking care of yourself and your family.

Five more tips for taking care of yourself and your family (and work):
In addition to my tips for creating more time for myself and my family, here are a few more good tricks that I’ve learned from other busy moms and that are perfectly in tune with this website and The Right Weight Forever method. Women who manage to take care of themselves without taking time and care away from their families:

  1. HAVE ELIMINATED ALL EMOTIONAL TIES TO FOOD.
Very often – as we have already said – it is better to take something away than it is to add something new. It is better to eliminate any connection between food and your emotions. These women are Naturally Thin, so when they are feeling stressed or in need of comfort, they think of a million things that would do the trick, and NOT one of them is food. They go outside and take a few deep breaths, they go for a walk, organise their closet and get rid of all the old clothes they never wear, they treat themselves to a face mask or a deep hair conditioner, they fool around with their kids, get down on the floor and do some exercises with them…

  2. EAT LESS THAN THEY USED TO.
Despite a thousand family commitments, housework, picking their kids up from school and taking them to activities, cooking and grocery shopping, they never go back to the way they were before. As their metabolism changes over time and the aging process causes a physiological metabolic slowdown, these women listen to their bodies and let their bodies guide them. They need LESS than they did before and they respect this physiological need. Without any preconceived notions, they listen to their real hunger and let it guide them.

  3. TAKE THE OPPORTUNITY TO EXERCISE.
It doesn’t take much to keep in shape and Naturally Thin women know it. These women take advantage of opportunities to walk whenever they can: they walk to work, even if it is a mile or half a mile away, they walk their children to school, they walk to the store when they need fresh bread or milk at the last minute… They see their lunch break as the chance to get out for a quick walk, and they choose the farthest spot for lunch with their co-workers or they have a sandwich on their way to the bookstore.

  4. KILL TWO BIRDS WITH ONE STONE.
I mentioned this before… If I take my kids to a swim lesson, do I sit on the steps watching them or do I make the most of my time and go for a walk around the neighborhood? If I want to put my baby down for a nap and it is a beautiful spring day, do I push the stroller around the park or let him sleep in the baby carrier while I get some exercise and fresh air? If I want to keep in shape and exercise, I can do it while playing with my kids. If I want to run on the treadmill for half an hour, why not listen to a podcast or a foreign language course at the same time? Multi-tasking is the way to go. It’s not always possible, it’s not always advisable, but when it works, it makes you feel good.

  5. EAT BECAUSE THEY ARE HUNGRY.
Women often ask me how they can resolve this problem: they get home from work a little hungry, they fix something and eat. Then they eat again at dinner, even when they are not hungry, to keep their husband and children company. How can they avoid this? The solution that many try, but which often proves to be ineffective, is waiting to eat, denying their genuine hunger as they cook and then eating too much at the table because by then they are starving. I advise them to go a different route: to eat when they are truly hungry, even if it’s not yet dinnertime, while they are preparing the meal for their family, and then have something light when everyone is together at the table. This way, they take care of themselves and their family, satisfying both their own and their family’s hunger.
