Losing weight by eating normally

It’s easy! But what does “eating normally” mean? Usually “normally” means “right” and, usually, “right” means less than I eat now.

One of the seven smart moves that I recommend with THE RIGHT WEIGHT FOREVER method is to “Eat whatever you want, often and in moderation” (obviously excluding any food intolerance or allergies). The next question is always, “Debora, what does that mean? How do I know what the right, moderate amounts are for me?” And the answer is always the same, “Try listening to your stomach telling you when it’s full”.


But how can I listen to my stomach?
Try this simple trick: when you notice that your senses (taste and smell) are less effective, then it is time to stop eating and leave the food in your plate. Gradually you will discover your portions becoming more modest and you will fill your plate with smaller amounts. You will be eating “normally”, i.e., what is “right” for you. Let’s take a look at ourselves and the concept of losing weight by eating normally. “Normally” means two things:

1 Eating right. Eating a variety of things, eating quality food, so no (or few) pre-cooked supermarket foods, no packaged liquids (opt for fresh squeezed orange juice over industrial juice which is full of sugar), vegetables, vegetables, and more vegetables and fruit, fruit and more fruit, and, of course, legumes.

You can never get enough fruit and vegetables. When asked if we eat fruit, too many of us say, “Sure, I think I had a banana yesterday.” So what? When is the last time you had a pear as a snack? Ate an apple in the office? Brought carrots for a snack at the park? Crunched on raw fennel in front of the TV? Up-to-date nutritionists know that not only does counting calories not work, but it’s bothersome. It’s time to turn the tables: serve the vegetable as your main dish. Make that sautéed chard the star of your meal and have the piece of cheese or fish on the side.

2 Eating the right amounts. And how do you know what are the right amounts for you? In two easy ways: a) observe the Naturally Thin people around you: co-workers, friends and family members who are at healthy weights, who are NOT on a diet (obviously) and who eat well: how do they eat? What do they leave on their plate? What do they choose? What do they say when they are full? How do they say “no” to seconds? Follow the example of your peers in age, life experience and energy requirements; b) And what else? As I noted earlier, learn to listen to your stomach telling you it’s full. To hear it, The Right Weight Forever method concentrates not only on your awareness of your stomach filling up but also on your senses: taste and smell, in particular.

When I talk about my method in books, audio and video recordings and live courses, I always insist on the freedom to eat whatever you want, letting BOTH your tastes AND your sense of hunger guide you. Combine these two demands of your body and you will find yourself LOSING WEIGHT BY EATING NORMALLY with “normal” portions that are “right” for you, for your age, your life experience and your energy requirements.
