How can I keep from SNACKING?

I am often asked, “Debora, how do I keep from snacking?” There is a fundamental problem with this question: It is not formulated correctly. Let’s see why and WHAT would be more constructive to ask.

Why isn’t the question well formulated? Our mind responds using a simple mechanism, which is: The mind answers the question it is asked. If we ask questions that do not imply the solution, our unconscious mind does not understand and remains static, disappointed but convinced it is doing what you want.

This is why it is wrong to ask, “How can I keep from snacking?”:


  1. THE QUESTION DOES NOT TELL THE MIND WHAT I WANT
    This means that your mind doesn’t know what you want to do. By negating what you do not want, you are not telling it what you do want. Your unconscious mind does NOT understand negatives. For example, you cannot tell your unconscious mind not to imagine a purple giraffe with yellow polka dots right here, next to your screen… Don’t imagine it! As you can see, you can’t not imagine it. So you must give your habitual mind, which makes the change, positive instructions. Tell it what you want in specific detail.

  2. THE QUESTION IS TOO GENERAL: USE THE PRESENT TENSE AND SAY “ALWAYS”
    If you do not want to repeat an action, you are the one responsible for giving your unconscious mind clear instructions. One thing you MUST do when talking to your habitual mind is to use the past tense for things you no longer want. If you add “always” to what you no longer want, you’d better relativize it. I suggest eliminating it and never turning back.

What is a constructive question to ask your unconscious mind to stop snacking between meals that it will understand?
To stop snacking between meals, whether it’s on the couch, hiding in the kitchen or nibbling all day long, the job falls to our habitual mind. Our habitual mind, otherwise known as the limbic system in our brain, controls habits and emotional reactions to situations or people.


With The Right Weight Forever method, you learn to ask the right questions, constructive questions that follow the “rules” of speaking the language of your habitual mind, which will make the change. This is what you might ask your unconscious mind to visualize alternatives to snacking between meals:

  • What could I have done yesterday instead of snacking while I watched TV?

  • How would I have felt yesterday if I had only calmly watched some TV and then gone to bed?

  • What could I have said to myself yesterday so I’d remember my resolution to go to bed full but not stuffed?

  • What are the benefits I would have had by eating the right amount at dinner and then letting my stomach rest from eight in the evening until the next morning?

Here are a few Constructive Questions to help you come up with alternatives to snacking between meals:

  • What can I tell myself today so that I want to eat the right amount at dinner and then do something else or simply watch TV?

  • How do I want to see myself already relaxing on the couch without eating?

  • How will I feel when I go bed feeling light?

  • How proud will I be of myself when I’ve accomplished this?

The importance of Constructive Questions. In any case, when we talk to ourselves throughout the day, we comment, criticize and encourage ourselves, we wonder about the things that have happened… To direct our minds TOWARDS our conscious goals, it is a good idea to learn how to formulate the questions we ask the habitual part of our brain (the limbic system).
